TNT History
FAQ
Almost half of hospitalized patients are malnourished (Waitzberg 2001). Malnutrition is associated with increased mortality, morbidity, and costs. However, medical schools often do not address nutrition in their curriculum. The Latin American Federation of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (FELANPE) decided to create a nutrition education program for physicians. With logistic and financial support from Abbott Laboratories, TOTAL NUTRITIONAL THERAPY (TNT) was developed.
The two-day, non-academic course provides several different learning modes. These include a 20 chapter manual, 11 lectures, and hands-on case studies and workshops to familiarize physicians with the equipment and experience of nutritional therapy and assessment.
TNT was piloted in Mexico City in 1997. Since then, almost 7000 physicians have completed the course in 16 Latin American countries and Turkey. TNT is thus spreading worldwide. Its goal remains the same: to reduce malnutrition by educating physicians about nutrition interventions.
