Total Nutritional Therapy (TNT): Nutrition education developed BY physicians FOR physicians

Why should you worry about malnutrition?
Half of all hospitalized patients may be malnourished. Since 1974, over 150 clinical studies have demonstrated that between 30 - 50% of hospitalized patients are at risk for malnutrition. Malnourished patients recover more slowly, have more complications, and longer hospital stays than well-nourished patients. This means increased morbidity, mortality, and at the very least, increased costs for the care of these patients. However, there is something you can do.

Why should you learn more about clinical nutritional therapy?
Early nutritional assessment and therapy may help to prevent or treat malnutrition. Well-nourished patients recover more quickly and have fewer complications than malnourished patients. Physicians can lead multidisciplinary teams of professionals to achieve these goals. This is covered in the two-day TNT course.

What is TNT?
TNT is a post-graduate, two-day course inspired by the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) two-day course. TNT was designed specifically for physicians by physicians. TNT recognizes the significance of nutrition in patient recovery. Physicians will learn in hands-on workshops about nutrition assessment, disease-specific strategies for feeding, equipment for both enteral and parenteral nutrition, and leadership of nutrition support teams. Almost 7000 physicians have completed the course since 1997.

What do physicians say about TNT?
Over 98% of physicians who have taken TNT would recommend it to their colleagues. Over 60% rated the course as excellent; over 31% rated it as very good; and about 8% rated it as good. John Rombeau, MD, Professor of Surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, describes TNT as "a creative and exciting approach to teaching clinical nutrition."

What comprises TNT?
A 20 chapter manual covering nutrition; 11 lectures with slide presentations; 6 case studies covering various disease states; and 5 hands-on workshops to gain familiarity with enteral tube feedings and parenteral nutrition.

How will physicians benefit?
Physicians will acquire an increased understanding of clinical nutrition and their patients will have decreased rates of malnutrition, fewer complications, and reduced health care costs.
